Tell us a little about yourself – your family, your hobbies, etc…
I have been married for 21 years and have three daughters. I had two of my children while I was in law school, so it was definitely a challenge learning how to be a lawyer while also learning how to be a mother. Two of my daughters are currently in college – one at Holy Cross and one at Boston University. We are an active family and enjoy hiking and travel (although two college tuitions is limiting our travel in the near future).
What advice would you give new attorneys and law students who are interested in a public finance career?
I would advise anyone with an interest in finance, tax, governments, nonprofits and/or project finance to explore a public finance career. It is an area of law where one can do well while also doing good. Actively look for a mentor who can show you the ropes. Join NABL and attend NABL events. I encourage everyone to get involved on panels and in comment projects. NABL leadership is always looking for additional member involvement and participating on comment projects, and panels allows you to explore areas of public finance in a more in-depth way while getting to know others in the field.
How has your NABL membership and Workshop attendance benefited your career?
Membership in NABL has been very important to my career. Starting with my attendance at the Fundamentals conference back in 2001 and continuing with the annual Workshop and Institute, NABL has been an incredible resource for education and networking. Each NABL event allows attendees to learn high-level content while interacting with some of the best lawyers in the country. Attendees can hear directly from the regulators and can expand their public finance network nationally. Participating on panels and comment projects have allowed me to meet some terrific lawyers while expanding my subject area knowledge.
NABL is celebrating 40 years in 2019! Tell us about your favorite NABL experience.
I have had many wonderful NABL experiences, but one of my favorites has to be sitting with Rick Ballard at breakfast at a NABL conference many years ago. I was a junior associate sitting by myself at breakfast. He came over and was very caring and a kind person. He knew many of my colleagues and offered encouragement as well as advice on my career. I will never forget his warmth and generosity.
